Veg Ball Manchurian

Veg Ball Manchurian is very popular and delicious Indo-Chinese appetizer. It also goes well with Chinese fried rice and noddles as main course. Yesterday I made this and without failing I took picture of procedure so that I can post this recipe which was due from long time.

For Veg Ball:
  • Cabbage: 1 cup (finely chopped)
  • Capsicum: 1/4 cup (finely chopped)
  • Carrot: 1/3 cup (shredded)
  • Spring onion: 1/6 cup (finely chopped)
  • Maida/all-purpose flour: 3 tbsp
  • Cornflour: 2 tbsp
  • Ginger-garlic paste: 1 tsp
  • Black pepper powder: 1/2 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Oil for deep frying

For Sauce:
  • Spring onions: 1/4 cup(finely chopped)
  • Garlic: 1 tbsp (finely minced)
  • Ginger: 1/2 tbsp (finely minced)
  • Green chillis: 2 (finely chopped) 
  • Soya sauce: 2 tsps 
  • Chilli sauce: 1/2 tbsp
  • Vinegar: 2 tsp
  • Tomato sauce: 2 tbsps 
  • Corn flour: 1tbsp
  • salt as required
  • Spring onion greens: 1-2 tbsps (finely chopped)


  • In a bowl, combine maida, cornflour, salt, ginger-garlic paste, pepper pwd, salt and all the finely chopped vegetables. Sprinkle little water to make a thick mixture. Add little water at a time . You should be able to make small balls from mixture, if required add little more maida.
  • Heat oil for deep frying in a heavy bottomed vessel.
  • Deep fry the vegetable balls till cooked on medium heat, Increase the heat towards the end of the cooking process and fry till they turn golden brown. Remove and keep aside.

  • Heat oil in a large wok/kadai and once the oil is hot, add the chopped garlic and stir fry for a few seconds. Add the green chillis and ginger and stir fry on high for a few seconds.
  • Add the whites of spring onions and stir fry on high for 1-2 mins, keep tossing them.
  • Reduce to medium heat and add the soya sauce, tomato ketchup, chilli sauce and vinegar. Mix well and cook for 1 min. 
  • Mix 1tbsp of cornflour to 3-4 tbsps of water and cook for 1 min then add the fried balls and stir fry for another  1-2 mins .
  • Turn off heat. Garnish with the chopped spring onion greens and serve hot.

  • Fry the veg balls on medium heat as if they are fried on a high heat, then the outside will get cooked and the inside will be not cooked and will give raw taste.
